ইংরেজিতে subject আর verb হলো জুটি: subject একবচন হলে verb-ও একবচন, বহুবচন হলে verb-ও বহুবচন। He plays, they play. সমস্যা হয় যখন মাঝে অনেক শব্দ ঢুকে আসল subject লুকিয়ে ফেলে। তাই প্রথম কাজ: আসল subject খুঁজে বের করা।
নিয়ম ১: মাঝের শব্দ উপেক্ষা করুন
One of the boxes is open. এখানে subject “One”, “boxes” না। তাই verb একবচন।
as well as, along with, together with, accompanied by, including দিয়ে যুক্ত অংশ verb বদলায় না। The captain, as well as his players, is anxious.
নিয়ম ২: and মানে বহুবচন
She and her friends are here. তবে দুই শব্দ মিলে একটা জিনিস বোঝালে একবচন: Bread and butter is my breakfast.
নিয়ম ৩: or / nor হলে কাছের subject
either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also হলে verb মেলে তার সবচেয়ে কাছের subject-এর সাথে।
- Neither the boy nor his friends run. (কাছের subject friends)
- Neither his friends nor the boy runs. (কাছের subject boy)
কৌশল: “or/nor থাকলে পাশের জনের কথা শোনো।”
নিয়ম ৪: সবসময় একবচন
- each, every, either, neither: Each of the students has a book.
- everyone, somebody, nothing ইত্যাদি: Everybody knows him.
- Many a + একবচন: Many a student has failed.
- news, mathematics, physics, measles: The news is good.
- পরিমাণ একক হিসেবে: Five dollars is a lot of money. Ten miles is a long way.
নিয়ম ৫: number of — ছোট শব্দেই বড় পার্থক্য

নিয়ম ৬: জোড়া জিনিস আর there
- scissors, trousers, spectacles বহুবচন: These scissors are dull. কিন্তু A pair of scissors is… (subject “pair”)
- There is / There are: পরের noun দেখে। There is a question. There are many questions.
- The + adjective মানুষের দল বোঝালে বহুবচন: The rich are not always happy.
collective noun: দুই রকম ব্যবহার
team, committee, family, jury সাধারণত পুরো দলকে এক ইউনিট ধরে একবচন নেয়: The committee has decided. তবে সদস্যরা আলাদা আলাদাভাবে কাজ করছে বোঝালে, বিশেষ করে ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে, বহুবচনও চলে: The jury were divided in their opinions.
পরীক্ষার ফাঁদ
- মাঝের noun দেখে verb ঠিক করা (One of the boys
are→ is)। - “as well as” কে “and” ভাবা।
- “The number of” আর “A number of” গুলিয়ে ফেলা।
- “news” শেষে s দেখে বহুবচন ভাবা।
- “A pair of trousers” এ trousers দেখে are বসানো।
